Special Takeout Orders

Selecting the Special Takeouts order type on the Orders screen will display the related detail section as shown in the screen shot below. Special takeout orders are entered in the system to allow a patient to receive additional takeout medication above what they are normally allowed to take home at one time. Often these orders are entered to accommodate patient business travel, vacationing, holidays, and poor weather conditions.

Field Descriptions

Total Takeouts Patient Will Receive

The total number of takeouts a patient will receive on the selected 'Process Order On' date should be entered in this field.

Number of Takeouts Considered Special Takeouts

Of the number of Total Takeouts granted, the number of those considered to be special takeouts is entered in this field.

Process Order On

The date on which the total number of takeouts will be picked up by the patient is selected here.

Patient Will Return On

Based on the 'Process Order On' and 'Total Number of Takeouts' values entered, the system will calculate the date on which the patient will be scheduled to return to the facility and display it here.

Verification

This field provides space for documenting what (if any) 'Verification' is required of patients receiving special takeouts, such as hotel receipts, business receipts, or work letters.

Procedures

How to Add a Special Takeouts Order
1.) Enter the total number of takeouts the patient will receive in the 'Total Takeouts Patient Will Receive' field. 2.) Enter the number of takeouts of the total takeouts considered to be 'Special Takeouts' in the 'Number of Takeouts Considered Special Takeouts' field. 3.) Select a 'Process Order On' date, which is the date on which the patient will attend your facility and receive the 'Total Takeouts Patient Will Receive'. 4.) (Optional) Enter 'Reason/Notes' and/or 'Recommendations' if applicable. 5.) Click on Save. 6.) A message box will appear, asking if you would like to print a copy of the order. To print the order click Yes, or click No to return to the Orders screen.

Considerations

Calculating the Number of Takeouts Considered Special

There is a wide range of variability among facilities in regards to calculating this number, which is why it's a free-text field instead of calculated automatically by the system. For example, facilities that close on Sunday often do not consider a Sunday takeout as 'special', even if it falls in the middle of a period of special takeouts. There are also differences in regards to how each facility handles holiday closings. Entering the Total Number of Takeouts correctly is far more important than entering this calculation correctly, but it is recommended that your staff develop a consistent method for calculating the correct number in this field.
